“The Bluest Eye”

Since returning from Minicourse Nicole’s 20th Century American Novel class has been heads-down as we plow through Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye.  While an easier technical read than As I Lay Dying, we have found that the heavy content of this novel, which deals with racism, sexual abuse and incest, has made the reading equally challenging.

This week Nicole shared a recent New York Times Opinion piece, “Your Brain on Fiction.”  As we discussed in class, this piece addresses what many English teachers already suspect: reading stimulates your brain in such a way that your actions, behaviors and thoughts can truly be altered.
